Aquarium Facts |
The
Sydney Aquarium was first opened in 1988, making it one of
the oldest in the world. It is compared to other great aquariums
like those in Osaka, Japan and Monterey, USA.
There are more than one million visitors go through the Sydney
Aquarium every year. Between 55% and 60% of all visitors are
from overseas and the average time spent moving through the
aquarium is 2 hours.
There
is an impressive 4,000 square meters of exhibit space at the
Sydney Aquarium. This includes two large floating oceanariums
where visitors can walk through, with sharks or seals swimming
above them.
There are 650 species and 11,000 Australian aquatic animals
at the Sydney Aquarium.
The building was designed by local Australian architects and
took about two years to complete. The original building was
built at a cost of $30 million and the more recent Great Barrier
Reef complex (finished in 1998) took $14 million to build.
