The Newcastle guide at Oz Index is a resource for travel and shopping in Newcastle,
Australia. We have information on what to do and see while in Newcastle.
Newcastle is Australia's seventh largest city, with a population
of more than 500,000. It is located on the East coast of the
country in New
South Wales, about 160 kilometers from Sydney.
Newcastle
is a relaxed, easy going city surrounded by beautiful surf and swimming beaches.
There a strong art scene, cafe scene, and vibrant night life. The city
prospered from the steelmaking giant BHP, but has since seen the company leave,
along with the dirty industrial feel that it once had. Where once there was working
sheds, there are now contemporary apartment blocks, over looking the lovely harbor
of Newcastle. Newcastle is still a major working port city, with an endless
line of ships waiting to come in and load or unload there goods, but the city
is quickly losing its reputation as the steel city. It is also located
just 160 km north of Sydney,
which is easily reached by freeway, train, bus, or plane from the Newcastle airport.
The Hunter Valley vineyards are also just a short drive away, with day
tours available for wine lovers. >> Travel
