Australia is located in the southern hemisphere of the globe,
covering 7,741,220 km² or 2,988,888 square miles, making
it the sixth largest region in the world by land coverage.
It is believed that the first people to settle in Australia
arrived more than 40,000 years ago, from Southeast Asia.
The Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon was the first European
to see the country of Australia in 1606 when he sailed past
Cape York Peninsula. The Dutch called Australia "New
Holland", but they chose not to settle the country.
The English sailor Captain James Cook arrived on the east
coast of the country in 1770 and claimed the land in the
name of Great Britain. The country started life as a penal
colony for Great Britain.
